New Queens Crowned in Sweet Adelines

The Sweet Adelines International Finals for both quartets and choruses certainly ended the convention week on a high note.

The women’s barbershop organization crowned their newest Queens of Harmony in Viva! who earned a final score of 2862. This quartet features 2013 Queen of Harmony Patty Cobb Baker on tenor, 2013 Queen of Harmony and three-time silver medalist Gina Baker on lead, longtime audience favorite and frequent top ten finisher Chris DeRosa (yes, Tony’s sister) on baritone, and 2016 Queen of Harmony Peggy Jones on bass.

Earning second place was longtime crowd favorites, Titanium, who had everyone wanting Insta-bangs of their very own! Just 2 points short of 1st place with a 2860, they are certainly favorites going into 2020.

Third place went to the darlings of Sweet Adelines, GQ, with their slightly humorous set about love and relationships, which earned them the highest Showmanship scores of the night and a total score of 2758.

Tenacious took 4th place with a score of 2701 and The Ladies moved into 5th place at 2647. See the full results here or watch all of the sets here.

On Saturday night the spotlight turned on the chorus finals with Sweden’s Rönninge Show Choir taking top honors for the third time, with an incredible journey through Swedish music, including a pretty extensive look at discography of Max Martin. Their final score topped the field by over 100 points at 3061.

Lions Gate Chorus out of Vancouver took 2nd place with a total score of 2945 and an introduction of the “fairygoldmother.”

And out of Northbrook, Illinois, the 2015 International Champions, the Melodeers, started their set out dancing, visited with some of the most iconic songs of all time, and ended with the 3rd place medals.

Sweet Adelines International Starts HOT in NOLA

The 2019 International Contest for Sweet Adelines is well underway with the Harmony Classic Divisions A and AA and the Quartet Semifinals in the rear view mirror.

After an exciting night highlighting the smaller choruses of the organization, Millenium Magic Chorus, a chorus that uniquely uses no front line director, took first place in Division A. Under the direction of 2014 Queen of Harmony Caitlin Castelino, Diablo Vista Chorus won Division AA.

Plus a mic test from 11th place finisher Lucille and a swan song from 2018 Queens of Harmony, ClassRing.

And while they may have finished 33rd, perhaps the most talked about quartet was comedy Wildcard, Don’t Call Me Shirley. Tune in – we promise you’ll laugh. A lot.

New Tunesday – October 23, 2018

In addition to all of the great variety of a cappella you can hear ’round the clock here at Acaville Radio, we’re going to bring you some bonus releases each Tuesday to make sure you’re finding all of the latest and greatest this talented community has to offer.

Here are our favorites this week – and there are a lot of them:

Pentatonix

Along with the announcement of their newest Holiday album (coming October 26th!), Pentatonix released their Nightmare Before Christmas-inspired video for “Making Christmas.” Tickets for their “Christmas is Here!” Tour are on sale now – shows kick off in Texas on November 25.

Sweet Adelines International Convention and Competition

Catch up on (or relive!) a stellar week of barbershop from St. Louis. All of the performances are now available on YouTube.

Voctave

BHS continues to release videos from their 2018 International, including Voctave’s ultimate battle of the sexes with “Anything You Can Do” from Annie Get Your Gun.

AIC Chorus

One of the most anticipated events of the year – the Association of International Champions comes together during International to feature past quartet winners. It’s quite magical when they all sing together, like they did for this “Dig A Little Deeper” medley.

Vocal Spectrum

The 2006 Quartet Champions have STILL got it. Here’s a signature performance of “I’ve Got A Golden Ticket” during their guest performance at the 2018 Central States District Convention.

Ndlovu Youth Choir and Wouter Kellerman

Ed Sheeran sung by a South African youth choir with a flute player mixed and mastered by Bill Hare? It’s every bit as awesome as you think it should be. So much so, we’re including it here, even with the flute!

Rockapella

Just a head of the release of Jams Vol. 2, we’re treated with a preview of “Lady Mine (Bach vs. Beethoven)” which incorporates the classics in a way that only Rockapella can.

DCappella

It was another big week for DCappella – US tour dates were announced AND they dropped another video – this time for their all vocal version of “Glory Days” from Incredibles 2.

קוינטה וחצי Quinta and a Half

Leading the way for a cappella in Israel, Quinta and a Half released a dramatic video for their cover of Rihanna’s “Diamonds.”

NoVI

The 2017 AcaOpen Finalists out of the UK just dropped a live looping cover of Bill Wither’s “Ain’t No Sunshine.”

The Bristol Suspensions

A little live video release from one of the top collegiate groups in the UK, we enjoyed this cover of Stevie Wonder and Ariana Grande’s “Faith.”

The Eight Tracks

Challenging themselves to create something fun in under an hour, this Boston CAL group channeled OKGo for this quick mashup of Nick Jonas and Taylor Swift. See them LIVE with Fermata Town at Spire Center for the Performing Arts on November 30!

And no videos (yet!), but you should also check out the latest from:

Birdland Avenue – Rabbit Hole
Unaccompanied – PINETONESBir
